The Sanctuary is situated in the Burren in Co Clare,
the land comprises of grazing fields, natural woodlands and
limestone pavement making it an ideal habitat for
browsers such as goats. As with everything in life,
“Rome was not built in a day” and so it will take some time
and a lot of money to adapt all the land for goat usage
(anyone who knows about goat behaviour will tell you that they
are supreme escape artists!!) but it will get done in stages
as has been the case over the past four years.

In 2007 the work was mainly on the
“Mums ‘n Lil Ones” field, where four singular goat houses
were erected for expectant mums, it soon became apparent
though that four was not enough and so one communal
house was built for the mums with older kids and/or
orphan kids and two more singular units were also constructed.

A large new field shelter (see photo below) was also built in the grazing field beside the main wooded area in October 2007 to increase the amount of housing for the boys who would over winter down there. The shelter worked out very well and proved a big hit with the wet cold weather haters. Goats do not have the same coats as sheep and here at the sanctuary we make sure that all fields have adequate shelter for the ‘not so nice days’.
