ADOPTION GUIDELINES

hoboonthemove14-6-11

So you wish to adopt one of our equines .........

here are our main requirements, suggestions, do’s & don’ts, etc

  1. Although we call it ‘adoption’ it would probably be better phrased as ‘long-term foster’ because the equine will always remain to be our ‘property’ in so far as you cannot rehome it, sell it, breed from it, etc
  2. Equines are herd animals - we do not rehome them where they would be on their own
  3. Prior to any adoption taking place we will insist on carrying out a ‘home-check’ to ensure that you have the correct facilities for keeping an equine - we will not rehome to anywhere that has barbed wire or unsafe objects in a field which might cause injury to the equine
  4. The minimum amount of land recommended per equine is 1.5 acres (0.75 acres if Shetland size). We will also require some form of shelter to be present - this can be in the form of natural trees/hedges, field shelter, stable  (minimum stable size 10ft x 10ft for a pony (preferably a 12ft x 12ft  for a horse) with sufficient free head room for the equine’s height)
  5. A safe & clean water source/trough is essential in each field
  6. Feed type will obviously depend on the amount of land you have, type(s) of animals you have, etc so we will assess & discuss each situation individually prior to adoption
  7. We will be asking for your vet’s details just for our records so you should also have decided prior to contacting us who you will be using
  8. You should have the contact details of a farrier whom you will intend to use or are already using
  9. Keeping a horse healthy can be expensive and time consuming, before enquiring about any of our available equines please have considered all the in’s & out’s of horse ownership

If after adopting one of our equines that you find things are not working out or your circumstances change and you are no longer in a position to keep him/her then you must contact us so that we can arrange for him/her to return to our care. Under no circumstances should you privately/personally give them to someone else.
